1: Songs SELECTED FOR THE FLEMISH THEATERFESTIVAL 2010

From gentle, frail and melancholic to rough, wild and hysterical, 1: Songs careers from one emotional extreme to the other as the literary greats infiltrate contemporary reality. (The 2010 Selection, Flemish Theatre Festival)

The jury 2010 consisted of Manja Topper (actrice Dood Paard), Bernard Van Eeghem (theatermaker) and Karel Vanhaesebrouck (journalist rekto:verso & docent). They saw 253 premières between may 1, 2009 and april 30, 2010 and all together 465 performances in Vlaanderen and the Netherlands. De jury viewed the complete theater landscape: from youth theater to dance theater , from mime to theatrical installations, from music theater to text theater. From these 253 premières the jury made their choice for the festival 2010, representing the state of the art in the theatre landscape.

BEUTLER ONE STEP REMOVED FROM LUCINDA CHILDS DANCE LANGUAGE
Beutler (one of the more interesting new dance makers in the Netherlands) exposes choreographic processes: the dancers’ sense of themselves and the way the audience looks upon them. And this is the conceptual message that lies at the heart of her dance. Beutler’s cover is a veritable feast of physical suspense.

1:SONGS MIME-PRIZE NOMINATION

Nicole Beutler has been nominated for the VSCD Mime-price for her performance
1: SONGS. The price will be handed out on the 12th of September in the Stadsschouwburg Amsterdam during this year’s Theaterfestival.

By turns rousing, seductive, serene, introspective, meditative and life-threateningly dangerous – with a rock ‘n’ roll attitude – this piece grabs the spectator by the short and curlies. Right from the beautiful opening scene – in which Beutler once again brings to life her fascination for the domain between the visible and the invisible, between presence and absence – the performance unfurls, revealing its true identity: a soul-stirring concert. Was this theatre, opera or can we even call it dance. The strange thing is that we can see through the trick, but we shiver when Sanja Mitrovic goes into action. With open eyes we fall into the trap of theatre. Nicole Beutler makes us aware of that with utmost subtlety in exchange for pure theatre-pleasure. Pieter T’Jonck, De Morgen, **** (4 stars)
