Schwer vorstellbar, das man das hier so weiterführen kann…Ich fürchte nur, daß das nicht immer so weitergeht… Wir sind hier noch so wenige, da fragt man sich doch, warum? Sind die Kosten zu hoch? Und da frage ich mich eben, ob das bei so wenig Leuten durchgehalten werden kann… Es ist so schön hier, man fragt sich einfach, ob das von Dauer sein wird…. ein bißchen beunruhigen tut es einen natürlich …

Sonntag is Nicole Beutler’s first project with non-professional dancers; the first to explore her ongoing and growing fascination for working with ‘real people’ and all this entails. For Sonntag, Beutler reconstructed and subtly manipulated the traditional form of the German Tanztee (tea dance) for Festival Tanztage in Sophiensaelen in Berlin. For three weeks she worked with eight women between the ages of 56 and 75, none of whom had stage experience. Beutler’s chief motivation was to preserve and make apparent the integrity of the performers, rather than eclipsing it with preconceived forms. Sonntag is a Tanztee without forced virtuosity, a proposal for a dance that is unpretentious. It raises issues about age, spare time and pleasure.
Nicole Beutler collaborated with visual artist-photographer Beatrice Wrobel and choreographer Martin Nachbar on this project, the first by the Europäische Erstaufführung.
