6: The Square

2016

6: THE SQUARE zooms in on mankind’s need to create order in a continually changing world: marking out, creating frameworks, drawing boundaries, pigeon-holing; square. What role does this man-made shape play in our society? In a festive ritual, eight dancers and one actress lead you through an impalpable landscape of possibilities.

In this second part of Nicole’s BAUHAUS trilogy about the basic principles of the circle, square and triangle, Nicole expresses the constant tension between abstract and organic. The square brings calm and regularity. It frames things, yet also shuts them out. It is restrictive, yet safe. Along with DJ/composer Gary Shepherd, lighting designer Minna Tikkainnen and costume designer Jessica Helbach, Nicole drives the ‘square’ to its limits and makes tangible our deeply rooted desire for nuance, poetry and vitality.

Inspired by the mathematical efficiency of urban city life, the magical abstract art of Piet Mondriaan and the hierarchical patterns of the American Square Dance, 6: THE SQUARE is a plea for freedom, in which dance, fashion, visual art and contemporary electronic music come together.

reviews

In a time in which delimiting borders appears to be important to a lot of people, Beutler’s work is very relevant.
(Parool, 24/09/2016)

"On a rigid square, the eight dancers dance zig zag mill figures, in which they rapidly change positions and partners, encouraged by a nice beat."
(Volkskrant, 21/05/2016)

"The MC, wearing a traditional outfit including cowboy hat, encourages the audience and guides the dancers from abstract and anonymous rhythmic dance towards a teeming orgasmic climax." (Metropolis M, 12/09/2016)

Guided by hard pounding electronical music, the beautiful young dancers pull the audience in their strictly rhythmic world. I want more!
(De PIT, 24/05/2016)

"It is an intelligent mix of events, there is always a movement to follow."<br/> (Theaterkrant ***, 21/10/2016)

"Beutler exposes the tendency to stereotype without passing judgment."
(Dans Magazine, 21/05/2016)

During the dance performance 6: THE SQUARE by Nicole Beutler, we witness the gradual breakdown of order and demarcations in daily and urban life into an organic amalgam of people, culture, freedom and diversity.
(Liefde voor Theater, 20/05/2016)

"Do you recognize the person next to you? Do you want to take care of someone or something? Yes. Hence we are rich, happy to be free – let us believe in the future and our community."
(Inferno Magazine, 22/05/2016)

"Oh my, Oh my! 6: THE SQUARE is G.E.N.I.O.U.S in every way!" (audience reaction)

The tension between the universal, abstract geometric qualities of the dancing and the underlying problematic emptiness of the monologue seems to be at the heart of 6: The Square.
(Ramsay Burt, 20/05/2016)
